Intro
0:01
hey everyone welcome here to psychology podcast one two three and with Coach
0:09
Adam Mason coach had amazing he began uh training
0:15
martial arts at the age of 10 in his uh black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of all
0:22
things under master Fernando yamazaki he also holds a black belt in Taekwondo
0:29
kickboxing I'm reading straight up from his book guys very excited about this
0:36
uh kickboxing under master Malcolm Perkins yeah he has competed in numerous
0:42
amateur professional Jiu Jitsu competitions for the past 10 years coach
0:49
Adam has been the director of the children's Jiu Jitsu program at Joko
0:54
willing kiss and Dean listers of Victory MMA gym in San Diego California welcome
1:02
coach Adam yeah so
1:09
we have a lot in common and I was just very impressed about the quality and um
About the book
1:16
the great work you guys put into you know creating this project right can you
1:22
tell us a little bit about straight up to the core of the uh conversation which
1:27
is you know the creation of this book and what this book represents uh well uh we came up with the idea
1:36
during covet when we were locked down we were locked down for a long time our gym
1:41
was closed for a long time and uh we weren't even sure if we were going to reopen
1:47
and I was like okay what what else can I do that involves Jiu-Jitsu because I
1:52
love jiu jitsu and I taught kids for a long time I've
1:58
taught beginners for a long time and I didn't really see any kind of guide for
2:03
people who have no idea about Jujutsu just looking to maybe like a stepping
2:09
stone like no idea about anything no positions or what it's about or or even
2:17
there's people who don't know okay what if I get hurt and I want to stop people don't know what Tap Out means so I
2:24
wanted them right I wanted to make something that just gave the uh people looking to get involved just a
2:32
stepping stone just to be able to get into Jiu Jitsu and I wanted to make it for both kids and adults because
2:40
I've taught kids for a long time um but also I know there's a lot of adults out there who have similar
2:47
questions just basic okay what do I do when I just on my first day if I want to get started in this
2:53
exactly you know and sometimes I find it funny that people not only with jiu-jitsu but just get in
3:00
shape in general that people sometimes they feel I don't
3:05
know like self-conscious and they may not want to
3:10
you know join right away they want to get in shape before they enjoy the gym they want to get in shape and
3:19
yeah it's it's that's the place you go to get in shape right yeah you show up
3:25
nobody's really judging you know we we are more self-conscious that people don't really
3:31
pay attention as much as we think they are right no nobody cares in more
3:37
nowadays everybody has their phones and their in their earpieces and in the gym
3:42
and everybody's kind of like in their own zone so if you have the desire to
3:47
start Jujitsu don't let you know you know a few pounds to to to stop you or
3:53
worrying about the opinion of others I think that is what kills a lot of people from doing anything from starting a
4:00
business from starting a martial arts for um you know um joining a health club or
4:08
or whatever it's or or a course right so true you have to uh it takes courage
Youre there for yourself
4:16
takes courage for you to to try something different and then um
4:21
yeah there's a price and just just to remember that like you're you're there for yourself like everyone's gonna have
4:27
different goals and especially in Jiu Jitsu there's there's gonna be 20 year
4:32
olds who are looking to be World Champs and 60 year olds looking to lose 10 pounds
4:38
and compare I said compare yourself to yourself you know you're there to help
4:43
yourself don't compare yourself to other people exactly I think comparison is really the
4:49
other thing that really kills a lot of people uh motivation right really
4:55
stops you from from you know achieving your goals and and getting out there
5:00
so yeah it's important to have courage and not really care so much about the opinion of others and to like take the
5:07
initiative and not do not compare do not compare yourself with anybody and Jiu-Jitsu is such a a wonderful art to
5:14
that you know we we train we train you know
5:20
for so many years and uh we get Tapped Out by lower belts and one day you're
5:26
the best in the next so it's very humbling art so it is a
Transformative martial arts
5:32
very transformative martial arts right like how has Jiu Jitsu transformed your
5:37
life uh um I'm one of those Jiu Jitsu saved my life people
5:43
uh well like I started at a young age and I was just lucky enough to have just
5:48
a great teacher who is not only involved in my life inside the gym but outside you know and just kept concert on me
5:55
when all of my when I had friends I grew up in like not the best part of New Jersey
6:01
um where a lot of people I knew I grew up with just aren't in the best place right now and I was so fortunate to have martial
6:08
arts in my life and such positive influences at the gym the the adults and
6:16
the guides that I had at the gym growing up or are just
6:21
I wouldn't replace my upbringing for anything in the world just the guidance
6:28
that I had and the people who I saw I was surrounded with and I wouldn't have been surrounded by this
6:33
people if I never started Jujitsu if I never started training so I'm very
6:39
fortunate I'm very lucky for just the people that I had and I was able to grow up with and I tried to provide that
6:45
kind of environment for the kids and adults that I teach not just like okay the hour's up get out
6:52
of here it's like I'm concerned with what's going on in their lives how they're doing how's
6:58
their mental health the kids how's their grades you know it just it's just Jiu Jitsu
7:03
encompasses so many things and I was fortunate to get into it
7:09
yes I think it's fascinating what Jiu Jitsu can do for you in a new kind of summarized like all the philosophy and
7:18
the learnings um right the the techniques so this is definitely
7:27
um kind of like a reference book I appreciate it yes thank you Facebook so
7:33
um how um how do you do you see people like even
Jiu Jitsu 101 for dummies
7:39
different schools like using this in their in their programs right how can
7:46
you use this in in your gym uh I actually teach I teach a six week
7:53
introduction course and other gyms are doing it too I see I think we have
7:59
Legion around once that does one I think there's a few weeks but it's things that you need to know like we'd all agree
8:07
that you need to know an armbar the just beginning you need to know a triangle you need to know what guard is and what
8:14
are you doing from those positions what's your what's your goal because people come in kind of blind they have
8:19
no idea like okay I'm on top of this person what do I do now and just kind of like an introduction to
8:29
okay you just started Jujitsu this is what you should know and that's what I wanted
8:34
to put in the book is just Jiu Jitsu 101 for dummies kind
8:40
of thing you know just what you need to know what you need to know for you to get
8:46
started and to get started and that's Universal with all schools I mean no I don't think anyone could come to me and
8:52
be and say you don't need to know Mal you don't need to know what a triangle is like it's pretty agreed upon the
8:59
things that are in the book and the lessons too you know like nobody wants anybody come into the gym being a jerk
9:07
you know just like the attitude you should have and the respect and the things that
9:12
I think martial arts should be yeah and you publish this
9:18
um you know through Joko publishing and um you know vict Victory MMA it's like
9:23
Ding listers and Joker willing gem so what is it like are you
Jocko Mazin
9:30
is Joko like sometimes come to to train or yeah
9:37
he's so busy but I see him probably three times a week when he's around yeah
9:43
I've known Jocko for 12 years now and what's funny is I moved here from New Jersey and I was I
9:52
just got my black belt probably I think six months after I moved to San Diego I got my
9:58
black belt and victory hired me to help with the kids program
10:04
uh because the teacher left and uh the the head instructor was Jocko because
10:10
his son yeah his son was uh still in the program and I saw him Thor was like nine
10:16
years old and he wanted to make sure he was learning Jiu Jitsu from his dad so I was Jocko's assistant for the first year
10:23
so the first year I didn't say a word I just listened to Jocko so I'm pretty fortunate I got to kind of
10:29
be next to Jocko for an entire year and I still see him and talk to him all the time and that is somebody he's this the
10:36
guy who who practices what he preaches every day he's the same person online
10:43
as he is in real life you know it's he's not a different person he's just he is a
10:48
disciplined disciplined person yeah he definitely took the concept of extreme ownership to
10:55
the next level yes yes what is it like to be a seal and uh how to succeed in
11:01
that very very intense environment and like you know what is it
11:06
like to be a warrior right yeah I understand that you also created them
11:12
Warrior kid program right I uh he wrote The Warrior kid books okay those are
11:18
Jaco's books but um lucky me he he put a jiu jitsu teacher
11:24
in the book and his name is coach Adam I see so I'm coach Adam in the way of the
11:30
warrior kid books that Jocko wrote oh wow so it was an honor for me I see so
Warrior Kid Program
11:36
he wrote those books and there's also a program that's like a kind in development I'd say like online we call
11:43
kids we call our kids program The Warrior kid program because that's
11:49
Jocko's books and then it's not just like who's ever the best fighter is the best it's like
11:55
that's not what those books are about it's like it's a whole lifestyle of discipline and and you know helping
12:02
others and making yourself a better person and I stole a lot of his stuff to put in the ABCs of Jiu Jitsu book
12:09
because I think they're important lessons yes yes direct quotes and some of them
12:16
from Jocko yeah I like this one says discipline equals Freedom yeah totally yeah it's
12:23
true you know you wake up early you you have the discipline to get your other stuff
12:28
to aren't done throughout the day all right um I don't know it's
12:35
and it's way more than just everything's my fault that's not what he's trying to say it's it's way deeper than that
12:43
it's a it's a good just lifestyle to like to live by what he
12:50
teaches yeah and he lives it right he lives there he shows it I think that's what's really important for us parenting goals
12:57
is that sometimes you can tell your kid all kinds of things and you know if you're not doing it it doesn't really
13:04
translate people you know kids really do what they see like whatever company
13:11
on a day-to-day so like you're not gonna if a kid doesn't want
13:18
to be something like you know you're not gonna force them to be that thing everybody's gonna have their own path
13:23
but just teaching a kid that okay like whatever you're gonna do you need to
13:30
have discipline or there's going to be consequences if you don't do what you need to get done
13:37
to accomplish what you're trying to do there's going to be consequences
13:43
you know and I think that's just the whole philosophy yeah yeah and the book there's also it
13:49
talks about goals having goals right like if you don't have a goal then you know
13:56
you just kind of uh uh your attention doesn't have like a
14:03
real Direction so you can get into all kinds of you know negative
14:08
thinking or negative patterns of behavior and you know who knows what
14:13
like so no having this values and having goals and having the discipline so it's
14:19
really fascinating to see how not only you guys are promoting that through the book but how Jiu Jitsu it's such a great
14:27
Avenue for that for people for you know kids for adults for women this is nice
14:33
to see a lot of women practicing Jiu Jitsu as well and in competitions or they're just
14:40
growing like we're just having right now the Jiu Jitsu Master worlds and Jujitsu
14:46
right now in Las Vegas and I keep seeing on my feet like there's like 10 000.
14:51
competitors right the brackets are huge would you like you know I have friends
14:59
that are blue belts and old students and you know coaching clients of mine competing their brackets are like 30
15:06
something people huge yes for women you know a hundred it's amazing 30 for
15:13
women it's a hundred for us I'm so glad so many people are into it that's so amazing yeah and
15:20
why do you think Jiu Jitsu is so cool right now like why is digit so popular
15:25
like what's going on like everybody's doing Jujitsu like uh Elon Musk yeah I
15:31
know Mark Zuckerberg it's because he read the ABCs of jujitsu
15:37
oh
15:46
nice on here try to show you uh my screen okay see what happens here
15:55
oh look at it yeah right so that's where you can find
Illustrations
16:00
it like the ABCs of Jiu Jitsu by coach Adam 19 and uh the illustrations are
16:06
amazing like it's also a jiu jitsu guy like Chris Chris ehlers yes
16:12
yeah she's an amazing amazing artist tattoo artist right tattoo artist than
16:18
just a regular artist like he throws in paintings and anything art he's he can do it he's just
16:25
really good and I wanted to use him and I had to back him but he he eventually he caved and he did the art
16:33
oh that's awesome it took us a year all over I think over a year to complete
16:41
everything and it's only 86 87 pages but there we put a lot of
16:47
work into it a lot a year to do it and it's nice like you know you guys were
16:53
able to use the time of covid lockdowns
16:58
that was kind of a bummer it's kind of a lame ass time yeah for most people and
17:04
turn that into a positive you know yeah so I know a lot of people I could say
17:09
myself included that uh was able to actually take advantage
17:16
of that time of that pause of that um strange time to to grow to do
17:24
something to that time instead of you know just floating right yes yeah a lot
17:30
of people there's two routes you could have gone it was either just I mean it
17:35
was a depressing time but it was that philosophy it's like okay what can you do use it and figure something out
17:42
I find it as Jiu Jitsu Community it's really cool because I was really proud of the Jiu Jitsu Community for sort of
The Warrior Spirit
17:48
like a lot of them fought back a little bit like yeah you know what we're gonna continue to train
17:54
there's a little default there you know it's like maybe the warrior Spirit a lot of them exactly what kind of find
18:01
themselves and stay and stick with jiu jitsu's a different kind of people you know what I mean it's not your regular
18:06
folk out there just follow and do whatever they say exactly yeah exactly
18:12
and I don't think any of them were like you have to come to Jujitsu with this it was like if you don't want to come you
18:18
don't feel safe don't come please don't yeah right but but I mean some of them
18:25
drew a line in the sand and they were like no we need to open people for me at
18:30
least this Jujitsu is therapy for a month I'm like
18:35
I'm a different person you know yeah I'm sure a lot of people are the same way
18:41
yeah you know there's a lot of studies that have been done uh in a field of
The Bible of Trauma
18:48
like psychological trauma [Music]
18:53
you know there's all kinds of different psychological traumas people can have right like violence
19:00
um you know medical things or disasters or views and you name it like you know even
19:08
they say like you know poverty or things like that you know just just being not having enough money and the struggle
19:15
Zone could be all traumatic growing up right neglect like and things like that so in the in the in the field of trauma
19:23
the Studies have shown that you know martial arts you know it's a way to
19:30
to get the trauma out of your body right so they say that the trauma lives in the
19:35
body there's a book called The by vessel Brenda crow called the body keeps the
19:40
score it's pretty much the Bible of trauma oh great yeah and uh really
19:46
awesome how you know trauma in the brain and things like that and this how like you know one of one of the ways is not
19:53
just to you know go ahead and try medication like how you know they even
19:59
basil Vander Coke used to be in the early experiments with when the medication came out Zoloft and things
20:06
like that but what he found out is that over time that those things are not
20:11
working just conventional Psychotherapy and meds alone is not cutting the
20:17
mustard for those people that have complex trauma talk about PTSD and things like that so they find you Jitsu
20:24
yes and this is like the way like I just did a book signing with uh it's a
20:30
non-profit called we defy oh yeah they specialize for military veterans who
20:37
come back with trauma and they pay for their Jiu Jitsu memberships and like then
20:43
just kind of advocate for them to start training Jiu Jitsu especially not just martial arts but they they've tried to
20:49
gravitate towards Jiu Jitsu and they'll find an academy and pay their membership and I mean I'm a huge advocate
20:58
but I'm biased I love Jiu Jitsu yeah with the five Foundation check it out if
21:03
you can support or if you want to be supported by them right with the five Foundation definitely I know a couple at
The Five Foundation
21:09
least a couple if not more uh teammates that are sponsored and supported by them
21:15
complete and they're killing they're killing in the tournaments you know because just of a little support they've
21:21
been in in in the military or in some kind of you know and and they have some
21:27
you know type of training but once they find Jiu Jitsu they take it to the next level it's just everything just comes
21:33
out and they really find their their calling in a way it's amazing yeah
21:38
and you can see their lives transform right you must have seen Adam the lives of many kids sometimes troubles right
21:45
they they're maybe bully or being bullied or whatever like drugs alcohol
21:51
you know things that are not serving them sometimes they you know find somehow their way to Jiu Jitsu gym and
21:58
then you can kind of see them kind of develop I remember when it was a white belt yeah you know uh
22:05
I I I have to apologize that I used to roll with when I was the
22:12
white Bell because I was a different person yes no much more unconscious much
22:17
more clueless in in how to you know how to be how to you know what really
22:23
matters or I just learned so much so much more humility so much more um
22:28
what it really means you know to to be a jiu jitsu practitioner and to like help
22:34
others you know and not always trying to win and that kind of crazy attitude that
22:39
you're always like trying to beat everybody and something to prove but like how can we grow together or
22:47
something like that that everybody's going through something so I didn't have that awareness because my own trauma was
22:52
so greater than you know I could handle that I could only deal with my own stuff and then you know first you know over
23:00
time I started to realize wow like this is transforming my life you know and I
23:05
can really now now I become the coach you know it's like the hero's journey at
23:12
some point you come in you're the white belt but before you know you're teaching the kids you're helping with you know
23:18
lead the class or something you're just like helping coaching you're helping something and then before you know
23:24
there's more meaning that it's just all about you it's not just all about you now it's about the a community so I
23:30
think that's part of what it means to be a warrior something Beyond yourself right yeah that's why I've taught the
23:37
kids for so long it's just like I love seeing that transformation and every kid is different I've had I
23:43
have kids that are like even some kids come in with bully Tendencies there's opposite it's kids who are being bullied
23:51
kids that are like kind of being bullied everybody kind of has their own path
23:56
that Jiu Jitsu I try to find balance for all those kids but I've had kids come in
24:02
who wouldn't even make eye contact with me so shy and a lot of kids
24:09
um that come in just on the Spectrum too and now these kids are winning gold
24:15
medals and tournaments and you see you see just their
24:20
everything in their life just improves and then keeping that in check okay now
24:26
don't get cocky don't don't get so ego filled remember to keep everything in check and like you said like now it's
24:33
your turn to help people you know just I love seeing that
24:38
transformation in the kids in adults is great but you feel with the kids it's
24:44
like okay they have this for their whole lives and
24:49
um all I can hope is I help make that difference you know for my own little ego I like I
24:56
like being natural guide for the kids to help them improve themselves and try to
25:01
help others yeah it gives us meaning right it gives us money to see something
Victory MMA
25:08
um improve in somebody's lives is very very rewarding for sure yeah yeah
25:14
yeah so I mean you you're coaching at Victory MMA right
25:24
and um I was looking at the schedule there's classes other times like dinglister coach
25:36
do you still have your legs or intact yes these videos you can watch you can
25:42
just you can just type in um fighting with a grizzly bear oh my God
25:48
I mean he's he's a big guy and it's just he is so good it's like he's a Jujitsu
25:55
genius you know but I think he's all he's he's my coach and um still they might say I'm
26:02
on the same schedule with him but he is he's always being one of my coaches and uh he's my coach and I always look for
26:08
him for advice and every steps on the mat I give him the respect that he deserves because he was I mean at a time
26:15
one of the best in the world and I always remind the students of that I'm like you guys are so lucky you get
26:21
to learn from here like it's like learning basketball from Michael Jordan and here you guys are the
26:27
guys there are so lucky uh and he's like a big brother of mine so I'm very lucky
26:34
and he actually just texted me too so I have to text him back that's awesome yeah he's I mean awesome and I learned
26:40
like I I wasn't allowed to do leg locks until brown belt purple belt at my own
26:46
Academy yeah it's that old screen style it's like cheating you're cheating
26:51
but I mean I got to Victory 13 years ago I think and
26:56
these blue belts were foot locking me and I was like okay great now I got to be a Wipeout
27:02
again you know so we try to start early with
27:07
the leg locks so what happened to me doesn't happen to other people and it's like okay it's not the best
27:14
um thought process to say oh this is a dirty move or it's illegal don't learn
27:20
it it's like okay learn how to defend against it you know instead of just saying that's a
27:26
bad move just you should learn how to you because you don't know what's going to be legal in five ten years
27:32
and you should learn how to get out of everything because you can't be in a fight and say hey you can't do that you
27:39
know there's a line we're not punching each other you know there's MMA for that but with Jiu Jitsu we try to say okay
27:45
how do you get out of that how do you escape in case it happens are you like a ghee or no ghee kind of
27:52
guy I started my whole probably five six years with the ghee but I love Nokia
28:02
guy right now yeah yeah there's just so many leg attacks it just I wish they
28:08
would just let you leg lock and key just let me heal hook like the guy can tap it's on
28:15
him yeah I don't see them why they can't they they can't remember it's a strange
28:21
rule yeah there's so many different uh excuses yeah there's different sets
28:28
because the ghee is too much fabric and if it's too late in this Lego man's like
28:34
I've seen so many people get hurt with kimura's and americanas when people just
28:39
put their whole like it's uh it's it's a technique if you get caught in it it's
28:45
on it's on the person you know yeah exactly are you a bramble
28:52
I'm a brown belt for me for many years oh yeah that's that was me it's purple I
28:59
was the world champion uh of being the longest purple belt ever
29:07
because I move a lot and I have many many foods like one out of five things
29:14
maybe that I do maybe more yes yeah so but right now you know I still
29:21
compete I just um yeah I missed this master worlds because my my shoulder wasn't really agreeing
Clinical Psychology
29:27
with the training but uh I you know continue to compete as much as I can I'm
29:33
also finishing a grad program in Clinical Psychology and getting to the field of neurofeedback text yes so
29:41
that's very intense like finishing December and there's the whole practicum part that you're seeing clients and you
29:48
have to have so many hours you know to graduate as a therapist so you're you
29:53
know talking to people all the time and you know processing all kinds of stuff
29:58
stuff that people has never mentioned before in their lives like big traumas
30:04
and you know unimaginable things and they're like maybe 40 50 years old is
30:09
the first time that they you know nobody's ever heard of that and I'm the first one to like so
30:15
it's very you have to be in a very serious space to like receive that and to like you know sit with that with them
30:21
and yeah and help them out so that I really enjoy doing that kind of work so
30:27
I'm gonna continue on to uh that line of work I'd be a hypnotherapist and a life coach for a
30:35
long time but now I'm actually getting the credentials of you know being a mental hat like getting up applying for
30:41
my license once I graduate being a therapist yeah and uh because I'm doing all that
30:49
leg work because I want to specialize after the this grad program post-grad in
30:54
neurofeedback training neurofeedback training is very interesting especially for jiu jitsu and
31:01
pro athletes that's why I'm mentioning bringing this up is because um you can there there's like a kiwi EG
31:09
there's like this little cap you wear on your head and connects to the computer you can read the brain waves and through
31:16
the brain waves like you know reading your Delta your Alpha your you know
31:22
Theta all your different you know beta waves it creates right a map and then
31:29
that that data can be fed into a program that spits out a report and it's like a
31:36
brain map report and it shows like which areas of your brain have you know trauma
31:42
like TBI or um brain fog or like lack of sleep or
31:50
even people that have ADHD it shows like um is the highest level of efficacy for
31:57
reversing able to D without medication just through neurofeedback training so
32:04
you can for for example ADHD they look at the Theta beta ratio so Theta it's
32:13
kind of like hypnotic kind of like if when I put people into hypnosis they go into more theta waves get more dominant
32:21
predominant right and then beta is when we're working like you know we're awake and we're working that's we're like in
32:27
beta mode but people that have ADHD they have the ratio for Theta is too high in
32:34
the frontal loads and then the beta is too low so there is a way through neurofeedback training other than the
32:41
mapping the actual training you sit in front of a computer like just like this
32:46
with something like a couple electrodes maybe like three like the ground and two more in a certain specific area that
32:53
you're trying to train so you're training your brain to stay on a certain wavelength in a certain frequency and
33:01
you can alter like the brain waves pattern just by watching like a video
33:06
game that is yeah you have the remote control
33:11
and then you're watching this video game and you're just controlling with your mind so it gives you the cues of Lights
33:18
in sound every time you in the right lane cool so you're in the right lane
33:24
that you can kind of adjust the like might reverse these things like reverse
33:31
is proof and scientific like for ADHD is FDA approved like insurance covers it's
33:36
like no Brainerd yeah it's all brain now for TBI also very effective
33:44
um for people that have concussions so there is some neurofeedback people that
33:51
just specialize in reversing the concussions like damage in the brain because if you get a concussion in the
33:58
brain like in Jujitsu if you're far you've got thrown or whatever you just get up and you don't feel like the brain
34:03
is not gonna like a muscle or something that's going to be sore you don't feel it but you could have actually areas
34:10
that are slower so you can you can see that on the map and you can Target the
34:16
area and adjust it and let's say you don't have anything right let's say you're your brain is fine you don't have ADHD
34:23
you don't have any kind of trauma psychological anything or addiction but you want to increase
34:31
the power of your brain your cognitive capacity there's programs for that or uh
34:36
how about age decline right there's Alzheimer's and things like you can get older your brain starts to get a little
34:43
lazy in low power you know and you can crank up the machine to like make it
34:48
work like a muscle that's so interesting it's so cool what's it called again it's called neural feedback neuro like neuro
34:56
or neuros with a oh Euro well no neurology and then feedback therapy
35:06
so it's very interesting area is there every area of psychology the specialization of psychology so for
35:13
psychologists out there they don't even know about this stuff it's so cool you know what I mean like they don't even
35:19
know because it's kind of newer yeah it also goes against like the mainstream
35:25
forms of like you know pushing I know Jiu Jitsu people like that they're stuck in their ways you know there's no
35:32
adapting yeah you know um it's good for jiu jitsu people in a sense okay maybe you have
Biohacking
35:37
TBI you have some level of trauma but even if you don't like pro athletes they
35:44
use it this is a form of biohacking right so biohacking is this whole field
35:49
in which you you hack your biology through science like you do the cryotherapy you do the sauna you do you
35:57
go to clinics and you you know the the NAD IVs and you do like hormone testing
36:03
and you do your like so it's like functional medicine you know together with you know just doing all the exams
36:12
and seeing like that's like for elite level right if I really want to invest on like maximizing my performance so
36:19
it's high performance coaching right oh people train their brain pro athletes
36:25
just to maybe track the ball or track your opponent so that your response is
36:30
faster you can I I did some for like in the back of the head like behind the
36:37
ears you can train for um physical balance so you're balanced like
36:44
in your in your physiology right yeah there's some for emotional balance yeah
36:49
it's really amazing yeah I get fascinated geek out on that pretty hard
36:54
oh I'm gonna yeah I'm gonna look into that yeah because it works you know like
37:00
um you know what are the things that can take people to the next level right that's then that's the other therapy
37:05
that the guy suggested one is like martial arts yeah to heal deep trauma complex trauma PTSD man people there go
37:13
and see like horrible things and have PTSD and then they drink to mask that they're they're not allowed to access
37:20
their emotions because they were trained not to you can't have emotions right go ask Joko about emotions yeah right yeah
37:30
right so you trained to like perform to be a machine right so but that has
37:37
consequences in relationships right so in your in your soul social life so they
37:42
said Jujitsu it's it's a great way to really overcome all that kind of uh you
37:49
know dissociation right the association come back into your body like become
37:54
like right to to like how to say
37:59
um yeah I mean Association it's uh yeah like I uh it's balance you know
Balance
38:05
rebalance yourself exactly exactly out of balance sometimes out of sync right we're disconnected
38:12
from our body disconnected from our emotions yeah you know and uh depending on what
38:19
media you consume depending on what foods you're eating you know mental health and then you know they're through
38:26
a pandemic there throw some Financial instability in there there's just like the people are just like on the edge
38:31
yeah a lot of people yeah so so the beauty of Jiu Jitsu too is
38:38
that you know it creates this this safety net for people like the the connection the human connections
38:45
sometimes like we you know one thing is to talk like this and to be on the screen but like that human connection
38:51
like you know to to be on a mat and you know day in and day out and do kind of
38:57
right you create this network that is like uh everybody's talking about like
39:03
diversity and like you need to like there's no more I heard my friends say
39:08
it there's no more diversity than on a Jujitsu mat there's doctors and janitors
39:15
and mechanics and people of every shape and color like coming together for
39:21
self-improvement and to improve each other uh I mean I it's hard to Advocate
39:27
something that's better than that for people in my mind just
39:32
just getting along for a common goal and purpose that everyone has just
39:38
Improvement yeah I mean it does so much for for people in so many levels and uh and
Mental Health
39:45
mental health mental health right you have to start somewhere so the way I see it the human being has four different
39:51
dimensions so the first one that we Mo most used to is the physicality is the
39:57
physical self right physical and then there's the called the intellectual the intellectual be like the mind the realm
40:04
of thinking and then there's like a whole thing about that like what are you thinking and what are you paying
40:10
attention to right because that will create you know different emotions and
40:15
bring about you know all sorts of things depending what what it is the content of
40:21
of your thoughts right let's say for jiu jitsu like if you're thinking oh you
40:27
know I have to I have to win or whatever or fail the discernment I see people
40:32
posting that oh I failed you whatever yeah you know what I mean you're not there to
40:39
you know prove your master right or to impress your master you know not your
40:45
master your coach yes about anything so I tried to put that in the book just you
40:51
know everything is learning and yes if you learn you ever like I'm happy to say
40:57
like I've competed for a long time I've never been caught in the exact same submission that tapped me out twice in
41:06
years of competition like it might have been a variation but not the same because if you lose to something in a
41:12
competition you know it sticks with you it's like okay he put me in how do you put me in that triangle the whole next
41:18
two three weeks you know at the gym I'm more I don't want to get caught in that again it's just different than I mean
41:24
it's just it it it's good to lose you know now it's good to lose it just
41:30
it helps you grow you know it's in like it's hard with kids especially it's um because every
41:37
time you get it's tears and you know you have to calm them down it's like we're here to learn like it's not that yeah
41:43
kids are awesome even if they win they cry if they cry
41:49
all emotions man right yes oh my gosh it was like the best picture ever just some
41:56
kid it was his first year jsu's tournament he had one match he won and his whole family was crying
42:02
he was crying he was eight years old his mom was crying his dad started crying I
42:07
was like this is the best day ever love that and you never forget because like the emotional intensity of them I really
Emotional Intensity
42:14
imprints and you never forget like in how you do one thing it's how you do
42:20
everything so when you when you feel like okay I can win in Jiu Jitsu I can get better improved I progressed I
42:27
didn't know anything and then I won it's like huh yeah goes on it's like huh maybe that's the same for math yeah
42:35
for whatever college life yeah yeah and I actually I mean I uh
42:42
bragging I went to I I passed the bar exam uh I I yeah I was I went to law
42:49
school and you know I was a c student but I if I didn't have martial arts I wouldn't
42:55
have passed that test like just applying okay this is what I need to do to get
43:00
this done you're drilling the the material yeah right exactly and like I I
43:06
would have been like I could take some I could do this maybe I'll do it later then I'll put it off until late I didn't
43:13
do that it was just like no you know what you need to do to get something done and accomplished and I got that for
43:18
martial arts not from school not from my friends you know not from my not from my
43:25
parents it was it was the martial arts school it's like okay this is called discipline and you need to do this to get this done
43:34
there's any parents out there listening to this I think this is a really important point that if your kid is an orange Jujitsu in a boy or girl or
43:44
I think it's really important to see that this cool system is not there
43:50
your children you are you know responsible for the education
43:56
of your children in many ways you have to be on top of the school and not just
44:02
Outsource your children to the school because you don't we don't really know
Importance of Jiu Jitsu
44:08
what's going on behind closed doors there like you know and what and how is this we know that's not
44:15
really preparing them for for life so if we waste their childhood there all that
44:20
time where the Prime energy into just going to school and memorizing things and not
44:27
actually learning anything for life we're wasting their time we're wasting our time right
44:34
Jujitsu is really something that they can carry on for their whole life that's
44:39
really gonna matter uh in the long run right whether or not
44:45
you memorize you know equations triangles and history facts that they
44:51
change and they change again we don't know you know so Jiu Jitsu is very truth because it's
44:58
like it's it's the same you know an arm bar hasn't changed yeah exactly
45:03
there's so many schools now you can you could do a free trial once a week to find one that you like like it has
45:10
changed a lot where back then it was one one school maybe
45:16
every 50 miles now it's like it's like pizza shops now they're everywhere
45:22
you know every every two miles there should be a Jiu-Jitsu scroll around you and find one that you like that's
45:27
teaching these lessons of just discipline and you know not being a
45:33
champion but like what it takes to be a champion you know and not killing yourself
45:38
because you're lost or you do you like if you even if you didn't do well like why didn't you do I'll just analyzing
45:45
things and having that for your whole life you know I mean I'm like I said before I'm just appreciative
45:51
that I fell into it because I could have just walked by the school and my brother could have never told me about it and I
45:57
don't know where I would be I don't know yeah exactly it does it just keeps you
46:03
out of trouble you know you can't be an athlete in a party person at the same time I gotta choose one
46:10
exactly yeah you can't show up on uh Sunday morning still smelling like a
46:17
whatever you did the night before yeah some try some try they get called out pretty fast yeah yeah
46:24
so yeah the men have a way to to kind of correct all those sorts of things
46:29
educate you you know in a way um but yeah in San Diego for example
Schools in San Diego
46:35
you're talking about schools being everywhere San Diego is a city that I don't know how many schools you guys
46:41
have there's one everywhere right and they're awful and they're all full
46:48
we have para yoshida's gym probably a mile away from us we have Clark Gracie
46:54
school probably two miles away from us we have ottos probably five miles away
46:59
from and they're all full it's not like they're we're not even competing against each other because so many people are
47:04
doing Jiu Jitsu now yeah there's Tenth Planet yeah sorry for everyone that I left out
47:10
I love you good yeah yeah there's so many like we can't possibly list them all but like in San Diego I like to go
47:16
to Leticia riberos yeah she's great she used to teach her victory oh really no
47:21
yeah she was the kids coach at Victory and then Torah Morongo opened her own school and they're doing great and
47:27
they're great people yes they are they really live it like and it's such a great Community you see
47:33
all these people you see Superstars at these local tournaments and competition and you're like hi hi people who've uh
47:39
it's it's just a great community that I love yeah yeah there's also baroon Jiu
47:45
Jitsu baroon is great yeah Alfredo is my good buddy yeah this is he's like how can you not like a friend oh yeah
47:53
who are you I want to like take them home yeah
47:59
so he's out there in Las Vegas somewhere so the oldest people are in Las Vegas right now but yeah not so much you know
Where to train in LA
48:06
like if you there there are some great schools in Los Angeles but not as many as San Diego
48:13
it kind of gets more sparse I'd say like where would you recommend somebody in LA
48:19
to go train uh I say it's up to them everybody stands around it's everybody's got their
48:25
own taste and um right right it depends do you mind you might be a tent Planet
48:30
kind of guy you might be uh more gay based um Gracie Barra kind of guy it's
48:37
like I think it's up to you but as long as you're doing jujitsu I think that's a
48:42
good step there's also um whether or not you want to compete or you just want a
48:48
fitness kind of like gym they're gym they're competitive the gym that I started at in Temecula under uh Tom
48:56
Cronin uh yes yeah Thomas Cronin he's he's a great competitor right he's um
49:03
yeah he he created this massive Empire there's so many kids yeah I see him at
49:10
tournaments all the time so it's very competitive there it's almost like you get in there it is you just become a
Competition
49:17
competitor there's no way around it you know what I mean yeah I'm rolling with your with your with your teammates you
49:24
know it's it's very competitive already because everybody's competitive minded
49:29
so that's one kind of gym that's not for everybody I don't yeah I don't want to scare off any older people that are like
49:35
oh I don't want to compete it's like right Victory we're very balanced it's it's we have 60 70 year old people that
49:42
come in that are safe like it's like okay like we know who you who and this
49:48
should be every school like the teacher should know who to put you with based on what their goals are and there
49:54
should be no fear of um okay go with this guy and the guy that guy rips your head off like this
50:00
should be the coach should be able to tell you okay this is if this is your goal all right this is how you
50:06
accomplish it right and if you're six years old and you want to compete like that's fine too there's people that do
50:11
that but this should be you should find a school where it's safe for you if you if
50:18
you find a school and you're an older person or just trying to lose weight really out of shape and your first class
50:23
experience is somebody pulling your arm super hard and hurting you like that's not a great environment
50:29
I don't think yeah the first first few months are
50:34
really difficult to you know like um you don't know anything trying to learn and you know once you
50:42
get to sparring I mean there's a lot of schools have beginners programs now maybe that's a good idea
50:47
with a beginner program yeah or just like we have on the schedule it says uh
50:54
beginner friendly just so you know you're not going there and getting killed yeah getting killed after work
51:00
the vehicles there just get smashed thanks people there's people that get like I have people that I know like they
51:06
get upset like oh this guy just comes he just wants to like roll and go I'm like well that's that's him like you what do
51:14
you want do you want to win worlds like then train with people that want to win worlds like the the mad is yours like do
51:23
what you want with it like you don't have to get mad at the guy because he's trying to lose 10 pounds and he's 55
51:29
years old with four kids like everybody's got their own Journey you know
51:35
that's for sure and also um it's this whole thing of like you know
Women Training
51:41
training with women and having women in the gym like it's yeah I think it's really cool to see a lot of women
51:48
training but sometimes there's like issues because it's like a con that's part like yeah there's you know it's
51:56
kind of rare but every once in a while you know there's that one percent or two percent like of weird like you know
52:02
people yeah stories that come up or whatever that's something that also the
52:07
gym has to Be watchful for and to protect the women right and uh to I
52:14
think to encourage women to train and feel safe right and uh I think the more
52:22
women are training the more it becomes like a more friendly atmosphere you know it's kind of fun to have you know the
52:28
women jumping around and doing all doing their things attracts more families more
52:33
children and really the children I think is the heart of the gym right that's true care of your Children's Program
52:40
like if you probably and it's funny I have like a 99
52:47
Dad mom's too but not not his dad enrollment rate when they see their kids
52:52
start to get good at Jiu Jitsu they're like oh like I better learn this or he's
52:57
going to be choking me soon soon they sit and watch their kid and then
53:03
they're like it's just it's so funny because what other sport do you see it after it's not it's not like they're
53:09
watching their kid play baseball and they're like I'm gonna play baseball now you know parents are like I'm gonna get
53:16
into you and then they end up I've had parents fall in love with it more than the kid eventually exactly that's what
53:22
happened to me I was living in Temecula for for a
53:28
couple years I was I've I've lived in Orange County for longest
53:33
time and then we moved to um Temecula and I didn't know anybody
53:38
and I didn't know anything so when I found this Brazilian Community Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
53:44
and then I went to go see and Carlson Gracie was there Junior was the first person that I saw every once in a while
53:52
so he's the one who greeted me and I was like in Portuguese oh this is cool
53:58
what's going on I'm gonna put my son in here so I infiltrated one of mine and then before I knew that's good so yeah
54:04
that's great that's amazing before I knew there every day I was trading uh morning and night I had moms like that
54:12
yeah it's a great it's a great story yes
54:18
so yeah I really really started competing right away like
54:23
the there's the grappling X tournament back in the day oh yeah I remember I
54:29
know this guy's no Corey Corey right but Sean were doing it but now that Sean
54:34
does his thing and Corey still does grappling acts yeah came back right yeah
54:41
yeah grappling X and um yeah just doing all kinds of different tournaments and
Longevity
54:49
still like 12 years competing so I'm just surprised that I'm still it's amazing yeah that's great yeah
54:57
and that's the great thing about Jiu Jitsu is like you see the 50 and 60 over
55:03
division it's like it's possible you could do it for a long time you know if your body
55:09
um keeps up with it which I've been doing it for 30 years now I'm still competing it's like I know
55:16
70 year olds that have competed for a long time and they're still doing it it's possible
55:22
what's the secret to longevity in Jiu Jitsu right because there's a so you have to be careful you can't be careless
55:28
right careful and careless and sometimes you have to be a little bit of a jerk but I mean like as to who you roll with
55:36
yep and not afraid to say no to the person that you're like No
55:42
Maybe not maybe not today maybe maybe not the guy who outweighs Me by 100 pounds
55:48
and is gonna go crazy on me it's when I have something coming up it's like I'm pretty picky with who I roll with now I
55:55
still roll with like basically like most of the students but there's some I'm like
56:02
dude you need to relax when you roll because you're going to hurt somebody and people aren't going to like you very much when you're hurting everybody
56:08
and it's not good for your Jiu Jitsu if you're just the spaz yeah yeah it's yeah it takes a while to
56:16
to slow the down it took me a long time still sometimes you know struggle with that to just you know slow
56:24
down everything and um and see see what you're doing and see
56:31
and drill and like you can really learn more
56:36
but I call it find a find a road dog like who wants the same thing as you I have a I have a guy who
56:44
um when I'm getting ready for something like it's like big ones like his name's
56:49
Tom and I'm I uh I'm like hey man I'm getting ready for this he's like let's go and we meet and it's just I trust him
56:56
and we both want to compete but otherwise like I'm not going super hard
57:01
every day I can't every day I'm I'm more relaxed and more Drilling and taking my
57:08
time and Slow Rolling like Slow Rolling is huge yeah learn to flow like flow with life
57:15
right go with the flow and stay stay in the game stay keep rolling right
57:21
I think I think I could make an analogy with Jiu Jitsu with just everything in life because it's it's just so you know
57:29
just it encompasses so many things it's a great it's a great sport it's a
57:34
great martial art yeah I mean the first day you step on the mat you're learning how to fall you
57:41
know what I mean you know five from the ground like if if life throws you down you know if you're on the ground that's
57:49
perfect because I'm trained on on the ground from any position you know what I
57:54
mean unconsciously these lessons are transmitting you know I can be in a
58:00
Chokehold in life I can be in a real naked token like the whole convenient but you know what there's a way to
58:07
breathe and calm down and find a way to defend and you know put the put their
58:12
hands in there tuck the skin in and and that's you start to without knowing it
58:18
starts to affect other in a positive way yes it's just a great it's a great confidence Creator
58:24
it's great at making more confidence I think every kid should be in Jiu Jitsu
58:29
every single child it should be part of the you know school system like some
58:35
places are like that like I think in in United Emirates
58:47
it's like Judo is like mandatory and wow it's a different level of thinking right
58:52
yeah and um also wrestling is available in high school but why not sooner right
58:58
so right yeah that's when they have all this energy like wrestling should be available sooner for kids and I say like
59:06
you know if it's if it's between an hour on the pad the iPad and between an hour
59:12
of Jiu Jitsu it's a no-brainer it's just like okay like here's the compromise just you you don't get to use this for
59:19
an hour if you're not doing something productive because class is only an hour
59:24
and then it's just kids just don't want to go a lot of kids they want to go every day but there's some kids like no
59:31
I just want to hang out at home it's like I feel like with those kids you just say okay well then you don't get to do this
59:37
because there's consequences you know yeah I mean the parents job is to parent not to be a buddy you know
59:44
some parents are too much like you know trying to be buddies with their kids and and not you know you have to be a parent
59:51
you're not there right to to you know there's there's there's time for conflict you know it's like okay let's
59:59
go you you'd make her bed you clean up your room and you train something you know like it's Gotta Have Some
1:00:04
guidelines and then you have this adults that grow up and you know don't have any clue like how they didn't know how to
1:00:11
feed themselves cook anything or like you know yeah clean up their house it's
1:00:16
like you're an adult like couple yeah we're sort of an adult yeah yeah
1:00:22
you can help people uh overcome a lot of these hurdles
1:00:28
and I hope like even like hopefully they anybody who brings their kid to Jujitsu I hope I hope they don't have a bad
1:00:33
experience but I hope even if they do their first time like try another school make not every school's the same right
1:00:41
no just who knows there's still some schools out there who maybe have some
1:00:46
work to do but you if you look you'll find a school that fits you yeah yeah
1:00:52
keep looking keep trying right it's just kind of when you find a therapist it's not just your first therapist that
1:00:58
you're gonna find that maybe is a good fit so you may have to shop around the same thing maybe with the doctor like
1:01:04
you know some you go to the doctor you need your diagnosis you're gonna buy into that yeah right here's your
1:01:09
diagnosis here's your pill no it's like okay or here's a surgery you need to take now wait a minute like let me get
1:01:14
another opinion yeah just kind of like this mentality of not just accepting whatever it's just like okay let me do a
1:01:22
little bit more investigation like and then you can really find a better place
1:01:27
a place you know it's going to fit your your lifestyle your budget your whatever right you can connect with people better
1:01:33
so it's on you to to really do the work so so that's awesome and um as a final note
1:01:41
like if people want to come and train a victory MMA and try it out if they're
1:01:48
from San Diego right what is what is the deal like um
1:01:53
is there a free trial your monthly deal for for people I mean
1:02:03
I think I'm gonna get in trouble for talking about prices I'm joking but I know we have a
1:02:11
three-week trial for people who live in San Diego okay and there's a 20 drop in
1:02:17
for people outside um [Music] uh but otherwise you know come come see
1:02:24
me and uh if you say if they're like hey I I saw you on the YouTube live interview I'll be like dude come in
1:02:30
you're fine come yeah I'll just I'll let him in okay that's cool and one thing is they're visiting one day or two right
1:02:37
but another thing is like there's you know I'm seeing Scenic for a month okay
1:02:42
it's crazy the how cheap it is a victory it's like 110 a month
1:02:50
for jiu-jitsu which is crazy for San Diego good price yeah yeah it's crazy I
1:02:57
mean he just the in the caliber of guys too there's great guys to train with there's so many good
1:03:03
guys you know what about women like is there we have an amazing woman's program now
1:03:10
it's growing it's growing we have a women's class every Wednesday
1:03:16
and Saturday yeah and um we have women that jump into just
1:03:21
regular classes but we do have women specific classes on Wednesday and Saturday and they're great and they like
1:03:28
and it's like a little camaraderie the girls all hang out too it's like it's nice it's a whole cult the women
1:03:36
yeah and I want to be a part of it but they won't let me
1:03:42
someday you got you gotta be at Birth like a biological yeah
1:03:50
